I was inspired to create this work because there would appear to be so many products manufactured now which are described as ergonomic, they are designed to fit comfortably into the contours of your hand.
Humans have always been making objects with which we interact, from the Stone Age tools to modern day products.
So the idea was to capture the raw concept of an ergonomic object in sculpture. I began by making a model from sand and glue mixed into a stiff paste, I then took a hand full of the substance and squeezed my hand around it to copy the shape of the inside of my clenched fist, I left it to harden, and used it as a guide model for the general form of the work.
The fingerprint patterns are burnt into the surface of the wood.

This sculpture took three and a half weeks to create and is made from beech wood.
